Austrian black pine truffle capabilities

Present almost everywhere in Europe, the Austrian black pine (Pinus nigra austriaca) adapts to almost all climatic conditions: it resists to cold winters (up to -30°C), tolerates perfectly hot summers and can be satisfied with low water supply. This explains why it can be found on the seaside, in the plains or in the mountains (up to 1700 m). Robust and fast growing, the Austrian black pine is also a very good producer of Burgundy truffles (its natural biotope being very close to that of Tuber uncinatum) while being able to give beautiful black truffles after mycorrhization by Tuber melanosporum. As for exposure, it fully appreciates the sun and tolerates half-shade. Not very demanding in terms of soil conditions, it nevertheless prefers clay-limestone to limestone areas.

About the Black truffle (Tuber melanosporum)

Growing black truffles from an austrian black pine plantA true "black diamond", Tuber melanosporum is as rare as it is sought after. It can be recognized by its rounded shape, sometimes bumpy, and its black flesh marbled with white. This truffle gives off an intense perfume and reveals fine aromas that make it an exceptional mushroom. Emblematic of French gastronomy, the black truffle can be eaten cooked or raw, as a seasoning or as an accompaniment to a dish. Black truffles are harvested from November to early March. Depending on the age of the plant and the land chosen, you will have to wait between 6 and 8 years to harvest your first black truffles.
